Flood Report from Banki

From: Jagannath Panda (AID India)

Flood situation in Banki continues to be grim & acute. What to tell about others, even my house had collapsed yesterday. My family is now taking shelter in my neighbour. As I have already informed you that this flood happened to be the most tragic natural calamity, Banki ever faced. Almost all places barring 1/4 square kilometer have been under flood water.

However, the good news is that water now starts receding. Water level in MAHANANDI is also decreased. Rescue & relief operation is yet to take full speed. Authorities are facing operational difficulties. Sufficient number of boats are not available, even the naval people are yet to join. People in several villages are surrounded by flood water. The sporadic rainfall is also hindering the rescue & Relief work & caused a great deal of discomfort to the people, who had already suffered immensely due to heavy onslaught of flood. In some places people are forced to take shelter under the open sky in rain. People have no alternatives except to succumb to the situation. 3 people died in lightning yesterday.

  • I have visited some places with the help of local people.
  • Though the govt had supplied boats, but they don’t have sufficient funds at their disposal at present. So I have contributed some financial assistance to them towards the fuel consumption for the boats.
  • As my house is near the hospital, I am providing medical assistance to the people with the help of local people.
  • I have also arranged to provide cooked food with help of local people at Govt. Girls’ High School, Banki
  • I am in close contact with the administration & assisting them in the relief & rescue Work.
